Environmental Magnetizm

Environmental Magnetizm was defined as a seperate field in the early 1980s. This branch used paleo-magnetic analysis techniques to detect transport and subsequent deposition and/or transformation of mineral grains. These techniques are particularly needed in sedimentary deposition, alluvial and glacial deposition and pedogenesis.

With the growing importance of climate change, the deposition of mineral grains and, particularly for pollutants, their subsequent absorbtion into the environment, Environmental Magnetizm provides non chemical tracer pathways for environmental absorbtion in both terrestrial and marine systems.

In addition, transport and deposition mechanisms can allow analysis of paleoclimates, paleoenvironmental and paleoceanographic conditions through understanding of more recent history and vice versa. Such analysis also allows understanding of anthropogenic pollutants and disturbance or otherwise of archaeological sites.

Molspin's large sample spinner magnetometer is particularly useful here.
