Spinner Magnetometers

Molspin offer two variants of this field ruggedised instrument covering 1" (25.4mm) rock or soil samples (Minispin) and a larger version capable of carrying 2" (50.8mm) samples (Large Sample Minispin). These instruments are supplied with connections allowing control from any laptop or notebook with a spare USB port. Software is also supplied and a charger for the spinner magnetometers for recharging the on-board battery. Field life between charges is approximately 8 hours under continuous usage.

Both variants feature a triple-shielded fluxgate for maximum performance which reduces noise levels to those comparable with conventional laboratory instruments.

Minispin

The Minispin Portable Rock Magnetometer is a low-cost, high sensitivity portable slow-speed fluxgate magnetometer. It is of rugged construction, battery or mains-powered, and it may, therefore, be used either in the field or in the laboratory. Its performance in terms of noise level and convenience is comparable with conventional laboratory instruments. Specimens are spun at 6Hz about a vertical axis inside a triple-shielded, anulus-shaped fluxgate, the output from which may be integrated over 6 or 24 seconds. The results are displayed as two orthogonal components of magnetization on a 5-digit liquid crystal panel. Integration is effected digitally and the magnitude and phases of the signal are extracted by Fourier analysis.

Minispin Specification:

Specimen size: Up to 1" x 1" (2.54cm x 2.54cm) cylindrical specimen.

Integration time: Either 6 seconds (24 spins), or 24 seconds (120 spins).

Sensitivity/Noise level: 4.5 x 10-8 EMU/CM-3 (4.5 x 10-5 A/m) for 4 spins at the 24 secs time constant.

Data output: On single 6-digit liquid crystal panel, with figures 9mm high. The display normally indicates the 'NORTH' component. The 'EAST' component is obtained by the press of a button. One figures after the decimal point are indicated for 6 secs (24 secs integration time).

The data is also available via an RS232 serial link (USB cable provided) that also controls the instrument from a laptop or similar device.

Range: 4 decade attenuator (x1, x10, x100, x1000).

Power supply: Battery or mains 240 or 110 V. The life of the batteries approx. 8 hours in continuous use. The batteries are rechargeable from 240/110 V mains (using the supplied power supply unit) or a 12 V car battery (adaptor not supplied). The power consumption is 8 W.

Unit Size: 160mm x 320mm x 410mm

Unit Weight: 14kg

Data processing: A serial interface allows the Minispin to be controlled from a computer. The interface is RS232, working at 4800 baud. The accompanying software can be used to control the Minispin with results being passed back to the computer. A USB adapter cable is supplied as standard. If a notebook computer is used the kit becomes fully portable. The software is MS Windows based.

Large Sample Minispin

This is a development of the Minispin. It is a low-cost, high sensitivity portable slow-speed fluxgate magnetometer. It is of rugged construction, battery or mains-powered, and it may, therefore, be used either in the field or in the laboratory. Its performance in terms of noise level and convenience is better than the conventional laboratory instrument. Specimens are spun at 6 Hz about a vertical axis inside a triple-shielded, annulus-shaped fluxgate, the output from which may be integrated over 6 or 24 seconds. The results are displayed as two orthogonal components of magnetization on a 6-digit liquid crystal panel. Integration is effected digitally and the magnitude and phases of the signal are extracted by Fourier analysis.

Portable large sample Minispin Specification:

Specimen size: 50 mm cube - 25 are supplied with the instrument.

Integration time: Either 6 seconds (24 spins), or 24 seconds(120 spins).

Sensitivity/Noise level: 4.5 x 10-8 EMU/CM-3 (4.5 x 10-5 A/m) for 4 spins at the 24 sec's time constant.
